The Scheme for Full Employment..........

.....I think is a book by Magnus Mills. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Scheme-Full-Employment-Magnus-Mills/dp/0007151322 I haven't read it but have heard good things about the novel - he's a comic writer (bit like Howard Jacobsen - incidentally, I attempted to read his 'Kalooki Nights' this week but couldn't get past the first 30 pages - first time this has ever happened to me.) Anyway.....I'm unemployed, media sales didn't work out and now I might be an commissioning editor in Sevenoaks or wing it as a full blown editor in Sidcup - and blimey, the thoughts of these as my scheme for full employment certainly makes me feel better. Fingers crossed then....

Dungeness

At uni, years ago - I wrote a piece of drama for my dissertation. It was set in Dungeness, a flat and fascinating piece of shingle on the Kent Coast. It's overlooked by the humming power station and has old converted fisherman huts that house locals and 'London Types' who think it's quite cool. The play is based around a (fictional) - prize winning - author who lives in Dungeness to escape the limelight. Ultimately, he can't hide his identity and is soon found out by the people around him.

'Dungeness' is an okay piece of writing and I was surprised and delighted to receive a 1st for it. Today it lies with the Out of Joint theatre company (I'll explain how it got there in another blog) on the desk of a very nice chap called Jon Bradfield. I'm under no impressions about what might happen and I really don't expect anything to come from it but gosh, it's exciting to receive a confirmation that your script's has made it to the offices of a production company.

When you write something you really put yourself on the line, throwing yourself open for a battering. I'm sure every writer is their own worst critic but I'm pretty horrible when it comes to my own jottings. I hadn't looked at the Dungeness play for about 5 years and to me, it showed - I found it awfully cringe worthy to re-read, to the point where on page 2, I just stuffed the whole thing in an envelope and sent it off to the Out of Joint chaps.

Is it possible to make every single word really perfect?

Football

Was rather pleased to see Chelsea go out at the hands of their former special one. The Blues have become a sort of Man.Utd - don't really like them 'cos they have purchased success etc etc and that's just plain greedy but Utd do play some quite lovely football and I admire that - I think.

This got me thinking about good football books and;

Pete Davies - All Played Out..................and that's it. I should read something of Simon Kuper but haven't yet got round to it.

Why is there a lack of good footy writing?
